Go out and look up… Originally shared by +Astronomy Picture of the Day (APoD) Comet PanSTARRS and a Crescent MoonImage Credit & Copyright: Yuri Beletsky (Las Campanas Observatory, Carnegie Institution)http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap150720.html A comet has brightened quickly and unexpectedly. Discovered last year, Comet C/2014 Q1 (PanSTARRS) is expected to be visible now for a few days to the unaided eye, just after sunset, from some locations. The comet rounded the Sun on July 6 and apparently has shed quite a bit of gas and dust. Today it is now as close as it will ever get to the Earth, which is another factor in its recent great apparent brightness and the large angular extent of its tails. In the featured image taken two days ago, Comet PanSTARRS is seen sporting a short white dust tail fading to the right, and a long blue ion tail pointing away from the recently set Sun. A crescent moon dominates the image center. Tomorrow, Comet PannSTARRS will pass only 7 degrees away from a bright Jupiter, with even brighter Venus nearby. Due to its proximity to the Sun, the comet and its tails may best be seen in the sunset din with binoculars or cameras using […]
Just another cool sunset tonight…

Something for him and her… Originally shared by +John Pozadzides (John P.) What the 4th of July Means to MeEach year, Americans gather together to ritualistically set off explosives, gluttonously demonstrate what it means to be a carnivore, get sickeningly drunk, and give the rest of world the collective middle finger. But is that really all there is to it? Hell no. – Half the people in America are only here because they were kicked out of their own countries. And the other half are here because their ancestors were abducted. There's a reason all the best serial killers come from 'Merica. Because even 200 years later, you don't want none of this. – How many other countries have EVER won a Super Bowl? – Wal-Mart, Coca Cola, McDonald's. – The entire entertainment industry. – Back to Back World War Champions. – George Foreman grills. – Bacon. – Flux Capacitors. – The Internet. You're welcome. – Fried EVERYTHING. And finally, lets not forget, the last time I (or anyone else) checked, the only flag on the moon is… you guessed it. The good old Stars and Stripes. So, if you're a fellow American raise a glass in celebration! And if […]
I cannot lie – this is actually a very interesting question..

Originally shared by +NASA What color is Pluto? The answer, revealed in the first maps made from New Horizons data, turns out to be shades of reddish brown. Although this is reminiscent of Mars, the cause is almost certainly very different. Details: http://go.nasa.gov/1H58GKF Scientists hope to learn more about the cause of Pluto’s reddish tint as New Horizons closes in for its July 14 #PlutoFlyby.
