Hmm… No red tail that I had seen… But maybe that changes for male and female..
How large was it? Do you have a real color version? The red tail isn't always prominent especially on younger birds.
It could be a Swainson's too – http://birds.audubon.org/birds/swainsons-hawk they are similar in size and habitat.
