    Every tab and every extension is one.

    I have been having this problem too, and I have no idea why this is happening.

    <sarcasm on>
    It's the process of Google stealing all the content off your computer.

    I have ten instances running with three tabs open.  I suspect, as +Gregory Pickering suggests, that extensions and plugins are to blame.

    Because +Google has fired all their good developers?

    shift+esc will pull up chrome's task manager and that will show you what each instance is doing.  However, if chrome isn't open…. no ideas 🙂

    Yep – every tab and every extension is one – tabs is clear – extensions have their properties and stuff background page. And it's a pretty nifty thing – every tab/instance can crash for it's own without crashing the whole browser. So – good thing.

    Chrome will still be open somewhere. I suppose it's possible one of the main processes died and the plugins and extensions didn't get the  ordered shutdown command, so.. linger around.

    Good job +Bryan Nabong I especially like the tab for nerds feature.  🙂

    Need to look for those settings…. This is with Chrome Closed – I totally understand when its open.. and even for offline syncing when closed – but honestly I do not need any of those till I open the browser..

    Since my computer runs Vista, and for some reason I can't change that….. I find this helpful. Thanks for posting it.

    +J. Rae Chip vista.. for gods sake.. upgrade to at least WIN7

    I've tried a few times. I don't know the reason why, but all my tech friends who have tried said my computer is too old for some reason to run it. It came with XP but I had to upgrade because I couldn't find drivers.

    +Eóin Lyness I am running the beta channel of chrome.. but not the crazy bleeding edge canary version…

    yea it's on the list…. after I pay for the medical bills I just accrued. And then replacement of my telephoto lens. So after I earn about $30k… then I'll buy a computer.

    background process for chrome apps.
    But I know sometimes Chrome don't close every process it should.
    Each process correspond to a task on the chrome task manager (shift+esc)

    If you recently had Chrome open and then you quit it, it can take a while for the processes to clean up and close themselves. That said, you might have an extension that's not playing ball and keeping everything running.
