Worked an F4 Flightline, They practice the Cartridge start on a regular basis. I have inhales that awful acrid smoke more time that I wish to remember!
So they don't start up the engines in pairs but all at once.
Lol in Asia the power was black new troops riding launch would panic lol
Old days was just one engine now days they have 4 at once then start off

I bet newbies get caught in those smoke bombs as a joke.
