Maybe when it hits second generation.. or third.

  2. Rebecca Atman 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    … it's…. a… camera? O.o

  3. Dan Embry 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Are these actually for sale now? Or just prototypes?

  4. Juan Gonzalez 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I agree. It sounds nice but I will wait for a bit.

  5. Marc Edwards 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    They are on preorder.

  6. Matthew Ward 20 Oct 2011 Reply

… just watched a video on this device… intriguing, to say the very least… might wait for a "Nikon" shaped one though.

  7. Arnie Calang 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    What are they exactly?

  8. They won't even say what the resolution of the image is… No thanks.

  9. Marc Edwards 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Take a picture, and AFTER you take it.. pick the focus point. Its crazy.

  10. Dylan Patrick 20 Oct 2011 Reply

yeah just got the email from them….my techie curiosity wants one and for 399 maybe…still in the air maybe in a couple months

  11. Dan Embry 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Oh wow. I'll have to look them up. I wonder what the price point is. Last I read they are were looking at 10k for first generation!

  12. Dan Embry 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I was waaaaay off. I'd sooner pay $499 for this technology than $599 for an iPad. Actually this is less expensive than my Sony point and shoot!

  13. Arnie Calang 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    What are these exactly?!

  14. Marc Edwards 20 Oct 2011 Reply

+Arnie Calang Read the posts.. I mentioned it earlier 🙂

  15. Arnie Calang 20 Oct 2011 Reply

=) Oh yeah a camera but I cannot imagine it properly… how big are these anyway? hehe

  16. Marc Edwards 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Not very large, one of the images is it being held in a hand.

  17. Daniel Corbett 20 Oct 2011 Reply

+Arnie Calang These are a totally new kind of camera that not only captures the light, but actually captures the direction it comes from, thus it provides a much more complete image.

It requires special software to view it on a Mac…

Unfortunately I don't own one, so I'd have to purchase a Mac + this camera… I'll have to wait a bit until they come out with a PC version of the software.

    I need a link!

  19. Brent Burzycki 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    +Matthew Ward good answer… 🙂

This is very interesting tech…. but why is it Mac only? at least for now.. Pretty sure to me this would be a MAC plus 399

    Here is the site: https://www.lytro.com

This must have just got emailed out or something G+ is now showing a pile of posts… I had heard about it last year or so but I am not sure I need this tech… thou it does give yet another facet to adjust in post..

I guess I need to know how light fields translate to resolution:

    Light Field Sensor
From a roomful of cameras to a micro-lens array specially adhered to a standard sensor, the Lytro's Light Field Sensor captures 11 million light rays

  20. Grant Collier 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I read that the resolution on these is about 500 pixels x 500 pixels, or 0.25 megapixels.

  21. Brent Burzycki 20 Oct 2011 Reply

+Grant Collier Really….? Does that translate to any ability to print anything?

  22. Marc Edwards 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Oh that's … horrible +Grant Collier That means something in the realm of 5k for a 8mp

  23. Damien Franco 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    Thanks +Brent Burzycki

I remember seeing this tech when it first came out but I hadn't seen the cameras.

It's a really interesting design concept and some pretty cool tech. I just don't know about it in real world situations.

  24. Interesting +Grant Collier. I'd read someone else's guesstimate that based on what little they provide it was about 3MP.

  25. Grant Collier 20 Oct 2011 Reply

It sounds like it's really only usable for sharing pictures on the computer, not for prints. They seem to be trying to dodge the tiny megapixel issue by using a new term of "11 megarays." And they seem to have done well in hiding this.

  26. Brent Burzycki 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    I see Lightbars used also….hmmmm

  27. Brent Burzycki 20 Oct 2011 Reply

    Stupid autocorrect…..

Too pricey, too low res – wait and see.

  30. Grant Collier 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I can't find the original article I read about the 500×500 pixel resolution, but here's something on dpreview that mentions it….

    http://www.dpreview.com/news/1107/11072515lytrofashionshoot.asp

I'd be leery of any company not divulging the megapixels and coming up with a term of megarays. Ultimately, you won't be posting anything on a computer or printing anything using "megarays." You'll be printing them using pixels.

  31. Peter Tsai 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I preordered one just because… it's supposed to ship in March-April timeframe of 2012

  32. Arnie Calang 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Im looking at the sample images 🙂

  33. Brent Burzycki 20 Oct 2011 Reply

Well Peter your the guinea pig, let us all know… 🙂

  34. Andrew Hurst 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I would say that images are only really good for display on computers as the point about the technology is that you can interact with the image and change the focus point, in all the examples I have seen, it seems there are only around 3 planes of focus, not an infinite number going back through the image…maybe the end product will be better. Not sure if you can set the preferred focus point prior to display or printing..certainly interesting tech.

  35. I am thinking of buying one , sure. ( I would like to experiment a lot with it )

  36. Maciej Łaszewski 20 Oct 2011 Reply

LOL. Lomography with new design 🙂

  37. Neil Carpenter 20 Oct 2011 Reply

I pre-ordered one to arrive Feb/Mar timeframe. It won't replace any of my current gear but it does open up some fun possibilities.

  38. Chuck Uebele 21 Oct 2011 Reply

Just found out one of my co-workers ordered one. Will have to see how she likes it.
