Ok so I have been looking for a filter setup for my 14-24mm Nikkor

02 Oct 2011 admin In G+ Posts

Let's just say filters are a major issue…..

I really want to start messing with long exposure work….and it seems this might be my only way to pull it off using this lens…. I know the horrors I face… but it will take me a few months to save up… any full timers played with this monster? Anyone have one.. they seem to be unavailable everywhere…

Holy Price Ouch…. Lee Big Stopper = 160.00
Lee SW150 = 399.95

SW150 Filter Holder

Now available to order, the new LEE Filters SW150 Filter System specifically designed to fit the Nikon 14-24mm lens.

LEE Filters have developed an entirely new filter system that enables you to use graduated and standard filters on a Nikon 14-24mm lens.
Initially being offered only for the 14-24mm, the system comes as a Starter Kit containing the holder, a unique adaptor collar for the lens, a 0.6ND (2 stop) hard graduated filter and a neoprene lens cap that fits over the collar when the holder is not attached.

A full range of resin graduated and standard filters will be available to order but there will be no Polarizer or Big Stopper available for this system. The filter sizes for the system are 150mm x 170mm for graduated filters and 150mm x 150mm for standard filters. The holder is fully rotational enabling greater flexibility when positioning graduated filters.

Also available is the SW150 System Adaptor, this allows you to attach to the SW150 onto any standard LEE adaptor ring, enabling you to use the SW150 on any other lenses you have.

They have used with one of the Big Stoppers?

New from LEE Filters, the BIG Stopper is a high quality glass 10 stop long exposure filter. It reduces the amount of light entering your lens by 10 stops allowing you to use a much slower shutter speed or wider lens aperture.

By greatly extending exposure times the BIG Stopper has the effect of allowing anything that is moving in your image to become blurred or ghost like, for example, clouds, waterfalls, rivers, and the sea. However the effect is not limited to landscapes, the filter can be used on cityscapes to blur people or roads and freeways to blur traffic.

The BIG Stopper fits the standard LEE 100mm Filter Holder allowing it to be used on a number of different lenses as well as in conjunction with other filters such as neutral density graduated filters.

The BIG Stopper will be available from LEE Filters dealers from March 2010.

  1. I really want this but it's so expensive for a filter holder. Hoping for a less expensive option down the line

+Scott Wyden Kivowitz it does appear – I think that you can use all their filters with it – i think.. I need to re-read their brochure for the third time…

    +Ron Cowie/ Cowie Platinum Editions Yes…….

Love to have a solution for my 14mm rectilinear and 16mm fisheye as well… Huge problemo.

Gooseneck clamp, $10 at Home Depot etc.

+Ron Cowie/ Cowie Platinum Editions , +Beth Anthony What's the deal with the Lee availability? Is that company insane or something? I've never seen anything like it!

  7. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

    +Kevin Cox good video… thanks…

+Beth Anthony does Cokin work for the 14/24

+Jonathan Liles thanks a lot…. might be a slight light leaking issue there.. 🙂

I am curious if you can double stack a big stopper and a colored filter…

  8. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

+Douglas Knisely looks to me like a 2-3 month wait is "normal"

  9. Javier Miqueleiz 2 Oct 2011 Reply

I made a DIY filter following an online tutorial. Total price=10$, 3h in one night. Cokin's price is ridiculous. If you want I can try to look for the tutorial for you.

+Doug Wittrock — FoV for 17-35 vs. 14mm is dramatically different, as is the whole look and perspective. I also have both. You don't get wide on FX until 14mm. 🙂 Also, 17-35 vignettes (as in completely obscures the corners) terribly at 17mm with even the thinnest filter.

I just purchased the lee sw150 after putting it off for a long time as well as the .9 soft grad. I also bought a 6×6" Cavision glass polarizer for it. Cavision also has nd filters. I bought the sw150 from kenmore camera for $375

  12. Patrick Smith 2 Oct 2011 Reply

You'll have to take off that sun shield thing to slide the filters in! Yes, when you get below 20mm, the vignetting take hold around the edges.

  13. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

+Patrick Smith curious why they show it in the photo on their site, when its clearly in the way…

+Jim Davis did it come with any filters? was there a reason not to use the Lee filters?

+Javier Miqueleiz if you find it – post it up…

This post looks to show the Cokin….

+Brent Burzycki yes it came with the .6 hard GND, the starter kit. Lee does not make a polarizer for it, not really sure why as they would sell np. The Cavision is linear but thats fine for landscape work. The 6×6" filter fits in the wider slot of the holder but need tape on one edge to keep it tight. I see Kenmore has them on order now. The good thing is you can get an adaptor to use the sw150 for other lenses

  15. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Ah adapter, that does make it better…..

  16. Douglas Knisely 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Where is the best place to find strong NDs (9+ stops, ND400+)?

  17. Alex Ulleri 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Where I work we are back ordered on Grads until mid November. I am not sure why they are so hard to get. Big Stoppers are also hard to get. I've seen one come threw our store last month and that's it. I'll post in G+ when we have some. http://www.vistek.ca

I need to read more closely….

A full range of resin graduated and standard filters will be available to order but there will be no Polarizer or Big Stopper available for this system. The filter sizes for the system are 150mm x 170mm for graduated filters and 150mm x 150mm for standard filters. Thats a bummer…. that why i wanted it…

Brent, I picked up the Foundation kit in August. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Vk7Zwh2-ASk/TjNDJo076-I/AAAAAAAAA1o/Gr7qAFcquPk/s512/Lee_foundation_kit_whatsinbag_rs.jpg plus the 67 adapter ring that I'm going to be using with my Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5, but that's just the standard wide-angle. I haven't gotten the super-wide-angle lens adapter since I don't have a 14-24mm lens yet. Not too sure if I really need to worry about wide-angle vignetting because I use a D300s, not a FF.

  20. Jim Davis 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Keep in mind the Lee foundation kit and the sw150 starter kit are 2 different systems. With the sw150 you will not get vignetting on the 14-24 @ 14mm.

  21. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Sadly it seems that neither will work with the 14/24 and the big stopper….

  22. Jim Davis 2 Oct 2011 Reply

here is a link to Cavision as an option for ND filters which go up to 1.5(5 stop) of light reduction
http://www.cavision.com/filters/6×6.htm these are 4mm glass filters so they will fit the wider slot, the other slot is for the Lee 2mm filters

  23. Randall Simms 2 Oct 2011 Reply

The SW150 is worth every penny if you shoot landscapes with the 14-24.

  24. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

Ok – so – how on earth do you do daytime long exposure work with a 14/24? If a filter like the 10 stop big stopper is not available… give up and move to a different lens?

  25. Jim Davis 2 Oct 2011 Reply

use a different brand of ND filter, there are film industry filters available. I purchased a polarizer from then, good quality. 6×6 inch will fit

  26. Brent Burzycki 2 Oct 2011 Reply

+Jim Davis so a 10 stop or similar – that said – sorry some noob questions here – it will fit but one of their items is its ability to fully seal to the holder… IE: am I worried about light leaks?

  27. Jim Davis 3 Oct 2011 Reply

There is no issue with light leak over the Lee filter as the filter will fit fine. There is a blackout sheild that comes with the starter kit, monday night if you would like to do a hangout i can show you my setup

  28. Brent Burzycki 3 Oct 2011 Reply

+Jim Davis hey cool – I think i am out of luck for tomorrow… but I will take you up on that… its appreciated… heck we should schedule one I bet a pile might want to see….

Wednesday night? I am EST and get home around 6pm. Let me know when is good for you

  30. Brent Burzycki 3 Oct 2011 Reply

+Jim Davis Let me hit you up tomorrow night and I will let you know…

  31. Douglas Knisely 3 Oct 2011 Reply

So, +Jim Davis — I looked at that company, and what I infer to be the strongest ND 6×6 filter is:

    FTG4X4ND1.8 Solid Neutral Density 1.8

I'm assuming that is 10^(-1.8) since their basic is called 0.3, which is probably 1 stop (which is 10^(-0.3)). That would be only 6 stops, which is nowhere near enough for still photography use. I have an ND400, which is called "9 stops," and that's just getting started.

Is there no equivalent to 9 stop+ NDs in the 6×6 format for these holders? Surely there must be!

  32. Randall Simms 3 Oct 2011 Reply

+Douglas Knisely 6 stops is the most I've found in the size needed to work with the SW150. I use one from Schneider Optics. If someone finds 9 stop+ ND I'd love to know about it.

  33. Brent Burzycki 3 Oct 2011 Reply

    Time to call LEE….

  34. Jim Davis 3 Oct 2011 Reply

+Douglas Knisely yes the 1.8 is a 6 stop. The option would be to stack 2 filters to reach the desired light reduction, with quality filters this should not be an issue with regards to image quality . I currently use the Singh-Ray Vari-ND slim with my Nikkor 16-35.

it puzzles me why Lee would not make the big stopper for the SW150. Maybe enough requests would change their minds, I know a lot of photographers who would buy it

Yeah. I have to avoid the tech blogosphere as well. Ashame that the Plus search does not seem to handle NOTs.
