It is OK for me from the U.K. (including when i hit the page using "https everywhere") The download section is not using an SSL certificate normally, so, if no one else is seeing that either, I would guess that you have some "overactive" virus protection, or some strange settings in your browser.
It depends what you want it for,,, to simply sync the Ipod there is Rythmbox, for playing music I actually use subsonic (subsonic.org) , which allows me to stream music (and video) anywhere (including on the ipod) – Although I avoid using the ipod touch for much other than an ebook reader now a days..
