+Brent Burzycki I can find nothing about this on the 500px website. Do you have a link?

No it was an email that went out to users…. I assume its in very early stages..

I just got an email today about one of my photos. I'm not a professional photographer, I don't even have a DSLR. I have no idea whether to go along with it. Any thoughts?

They seem to be keeping it under wraps until they are closer to public unveiling. I was invited as well. It would be smart of them to amass some really images to test out the interest from buyers beforehand, which is what they seem to be doing. The terms of the agreement allow you to continue to use your photo yourself, including web, portfolio, and selling fine art prints. I didn't see anything that concerned me, so I agreed to the image they selected, we'll see how it goes.

They've chosen one of my photos. I read the agreement and in essence it means that they will pay me 30% of the fee for whatever they receive for its use.

I was contacted today for about seven or eight of my photos. I see from the article below that licensing starts at $250, meaning a minimum of $75 to the photographer. Lots of comments on the article below, mostly negative. I'm not sure what to do.

I think it depends on the situation of each individual. If you are a pro and very likely to sell a number of your photographs then there may be better outlets for your work. If, like me, you're just an enthusiastic amateur, then it offers a chance to sell a picture or two that otherwise I wouldn't have had. I am not actively trying to sell images, but if someone comes along and offers a free marketing outlet I'd be a fool not to take it if the terms are reasonable, which I think they are from 500px.

+Steve Boyko waiting and watching is never a bad plan… And there are always negative haters of anything new especially in photography…. Where one wants to make money on your work by only really offering traffic and eyeballs… Most photographers have no idea what eyeballs are worth..

I've just been contacted for 40 images. Lots of promises of forthcoming riches etc etc but I think I'll give it a miss. $75 a shot? Do they think I'm that desperate?? I can get three or four times that amount for a single non-exclusive sale.

+Karl Williams I would say if you already have a channel to market images then the service is not for you…. At least initially… I think in many ways there is a core large group of people that have no outlet to sell images and do not want to, asked them but they are actually sellable work… This might be a better option for that subset…
