How do you share your photos here on G+ What is your dream sharing concept?

As many might or might not know there are many ways to share a photo here on G+ – not all are great and all seem to come with some limitation:

Link to it
Embedded Thumbnail
Link from Other site
Link from Picasa
Link from Picasa with Lightbox
Upload Album
Upload to single post?

Also how do you go about organizing your Picasa Albums?

Do you?
Do you care?
Do you share from Albums?
Do you want to see a +1 button in albums?

What is your dream sharing concept?

What and how do you want to see comments handled?

Let's put together some ideas and then we can all submit feedback to the Google Team.

    Action > Share. done.

  2. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Beau Kahler I just thought they added it, but I guess it's a suggestion – or at least, I do not have the link. I totally agree!

+Vincent Mo Action > Share in the single photos would be a good improvement! Sending a feedback!

  3. Fábio Pereira 5 Sep 2011 Reply

The normal way is to upload one album, than I make share.

I also organize my photos 😉

  4. iam eli 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I upload to 500px/avfreq and G+ along with a link on G+ back to my portfolio on 500px.

  5. Brent Burzycki 5 Sep 2011 Reply

Also do you want to see a +1 button in albums?

  6. Vivek Devalkar 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I'd like to just drop one or more photos into the share box and be able to choose an existing album or new album right there, choose a photo a my main album photo and click share.

Right now I upload photos in Google+ Photos, then move the photo I want as m main photo in Picasa and then share the album through Google+. Too much work.

  7. Beau Kahler 5 Sep 2011 Reply

    +Brent Burzycki yes, +1 under a photo.

  8. Olav Folland 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I've been uploading photo-per-post because of the difference in thumbnail sizes. I'd love to organize into albums on here, but I haven't to keep from spamming the stream while I do so.

One thing I would like is to be able to upload an album, and then just share a few photos from it.

And +Brent Burzycki – +1 buttons in albums/photos would be an excellent addition also.

  9. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

At any rate, I usually use Picasa on my computer and sync the albums I want, so that if I add photos they come up. Then I share from the site.

  10. Aaron Yeoman 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I upload per post. Gives me alot more control and nice thumbnail and story for my followers. Sometimes I'll link from 500px.

  11. Vivek Devalkar 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Davide Cassenti uploading via Picasa eats up on your storage space right. Actually that is the reason why I upload via Google+ Photos.
In any case, I'd still like everything (photos, videos, sharing content, links, invites, polls etc) integrated into this one place.

  12. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Vivek Devalkar no, because the limit of Picasa is 1600×1200 and they don't count anything smaller than 2048×2048. I am not using a single byte in my Picasa!

  13. Fábio Pereira 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Davide Cassenti is right, +Vivek Devalkar I also upload photos via Picasa and organize the albuns on Picasa and the space that is being eaten is for some photos I have that are larger than the limit they say. 😉

  14. I just upload into single posts, like +Aaron Yeoman; although I rarely have the nice story to add to the photo. I need to work on that.

  15. Olav Folland 5 Sep 2011 Reply

Hasn't Picassa removed their space restrictions as part of the move closer to G+? They're the same albums with different interfaces.

  16. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Olav Folland only for pictures up to 2048×2048 – that's why using Picasa is ok, if you just set it to reduce the size to 1600

  17. Olav Folland 5 Sep 2011 Reply

Gotcha. My photos are all 1500 on the long side anyhow, so I wouldn't see that.

  18. Brent Burzycki 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Davide Cassenti So you have to upload – then physically go back into Picasa via the G+ Photos tab and assign who you wish to share that album with correct?

  19. Fábio Pereira 5 Sep 2011 Reply

In Picasa you can share the albuns with people on G+.

when you are on the album click -> Share and ti will show a window just like on G+ to choose with who you want to share with 😉

  20. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki Well, from Picasa you might set the album as public and everyone would see it, but not in the stream. If you want it to appear in the stream, you must go through G+

+Olav Folland Mine are bigger, but I post full size on Flickr because on Picasa I don't have the privacy control for single photos; I did send them feedback about that, but until this is not implemented I'm not gonna use Picasaweb as the main store for my pics.

  21. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Fábio Pereira only in Picasaweb, not from the software on your computer

  22. Brent Burzycki 5 Sep 2011 Reply

See this is what I see confusing so many here….

    How to Share?

    How to upload?

But how that effects each service…..and what options you get in doing each…..

Honestly I would probably benefit from taking the time to try to do it each way and then know – but instead of taking a day to do that I am hoping this thread details out all the options people use or want to see and I can put together some kind of overview….

  23. Mike Keller 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I've tried organizing albums here on G+, but then every time I want to post a few more photos, they don't fit any existing albums. 🙁

  24. Karen Hutton 5 Sep 2011 Reply

I can't seem to wrap my head around the whole Picasa vs. G+ difference/interplay ramifications, no matter how much anyone explains it. And the album-share-spam thing that happens on G+ makes me nuts. I have an album I'd like to upload and share right now – on G+ is fine – and share somehow without annoying my entire stream. Would rather not foster haters! But I'm so confused about each of the ramifications of doing it all the various ways available that I'm stuck now. Hence chatting with you, +Brent Burzycki… and the birth of this post!

  25. Brent Burzycki 5 Sep 2011 Reply

Here is a post from +Adam Kumiszcza that is yet another take on photo sharing:

    https://plus.google.com/104042965789095032304/posts/4LTYGV1kY7F

  26. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Karen Hutton why confused? I mean, you might simply make an album public from Picasa or G+ and nobody will get a notification in the stream. If you share it from G+, people you share with will do get, but it's not mandatory.

  27. Brent Burzycki 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Davide Cassenti Are we positive that you can create an album from the G+ photos tab – not share it and it is still shared with those circles? Or does it just sit in the albums page and need to be manually shared?

  28. Fábio Pereira 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Davide Cassenti yes, not from the software. 😉

  29. Davide Cassenti 5 Sep 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki you might go to your G+ Photos page and click on the link next to Visible to to share it with the people/Circles you want. Once done, the system automatically proposes you to share it in the Stream, but if you click on Cancel it won't happen.

I also think you might make an album public and then click on Share and send it only to the stream of selected people/circles.

  33. Vincent Mo 6 Sep 2011 Reply

So far, the suggestions I see here are:

    1. share a photo from lightbox (a.k.a. Actions -> Share)
    2. share selected photos from an album
    3. +1 a photo
    4. +1 an album
    5. don't spam the stream with photos

    Anything else I'm missing?

  34. Craig Kennedy 6 Sep 2011 Reply

I'd love to be able to get better previews from other links (e.g. 500px). Right now I upload to picassa, copy the picassa web link and use that in the post to get the best size preview in the post.

  35. Tamara Pruessner 6 Sep 2011 Reply

    How I share:
Profile –> photos –> upload new photos –> then I upload one photo, type what info I want to go into the post, then add my circles/public, then I click share.

I do organize my albums, but I do that when I am uploading new photos. I would like to see the +1's in the albums, too, on Picasa.

  36. Cora Triton 6 Sep 2011 Reply

+Vincent Mo I'm in the photo critics circle by +Colby Brown . It would be nice to have the opportunity to edit a photo post with a second photo to show the difference. And to put a photo and a video/link to a post.

  37. When I share a album I would like to choose the picture to be shown as the large size "album-picture"

  38. Typically I link back to my photography website. SOMETIMES I'll upload 4×6 72 dpi pics w/a copyright symbol to picassa then share that album. Worry about doing that though EVEN w/copyright on image. That's why I prefer to link back to my site.

  39. Chris Suspect 6 Sep 2011 Reply

I agree with +Craig Kennedy on better previews. Right now it feels like G+ gives priority to images in the stream that are posted within the Google nexus, which is understandable, but still, I'd like to see preview sizes of images whether on Google or not be of equal size.

Also, while not entirely related to photography, it would be nice to see the implementation of groups so people can form critique circles or curate different types of photos.

  40. Gerard Charnley 6 Sep 2011 Reply

I also use the upload to picasa then copy URL to G+ as this is what was recommended in the early days. Though I've just discovered all the comments and +1's in my stream haven't transferred to the images in picasa. I'm truly gutted 🙁 I bet many others will have not realised this also.

+Vincent Mo, is there any chance this could be changed for future posts but also to have historic comments and +1's transferred across so they are not lost in the stream forever? This would just make my day and I will forever be your number +1 fan!

  41. Cora Triton 6 Sep 2011 Reply

+Chris Suspect Agree – public circles to share topics and especially photos will be cool. And the opportunity to share circles…

  42. Brent Burzycki 6 Sep 2011 Reply

For those that have not seen this:

See this video walk through I did last night for +Karen Hutton to try to show how strange it seems to be to upload an album without sharing it and polluting your stream with posts…seems like there must be an easier way…but its the only way we know at this time… Do you know a better way? List it up?

Screencast Link: Its not professional just utilitarian

I am not aware that I have any connection to Picasa. I have edited pictures in Picasa (it appears to come with chrome), and it always says "saved to Picasa" but I have no idea where that goes. I have a Posterous account of long standing and one on Flickr, and my Posterous account automatically posts to Twitter and Facebook and Flickr – so one posting covers all bases, or did until G+ came along. Now I have to post separately to G+ and to Posterous, meaning that many of the same followers/friends/circle mates on other media will see everything twice, which I don't like. I am hoping G+ will decide to interact with everyone else, or the majors anyway. If not, then I will not be posting my photography here at all. ;D

  44. I create an album in Picasa (Agh! Picasa! I avoided it for years, but now with G+ … sigh) and then share it with just one individual when asked to "share" (my album wouldn't become created unless I did share it, grrr). Then click on the individual image that I want to share and take the URL from the address bar there in Picasa. Copy that, come back to G+ and click the link icon in the Share dialogue box and paste the link and click "Add". This ensures that my thumbnails always appear large in the post (sharing it directly from Picasa gives you a smaller thumbnail inpost). If you do it this way, don't forget to change the Visibility of the album to either "Public" or "Limited – anyone with the link" before posting an individual image. This might be the solution you were looking for +Olav Folland .

    +Robin Griggs Wood +Maren W thanks for the posts……..

Maybe we can get a few more of the big G+ users to reshare this when possible to get a few more opinions…

    +Thomas Hawk +Catherine Hall +Colby Brown +Lisa Bettany

If you do re-share it – thanks in advance….

This is a great discussion – I just do not have enough followers for a massive idea pool…….

  46. Doug Brewer 6 Sep 2011 Reply

hey +Brent Burzycki, I mostly just add to my G+ albums. Once I get my 500px site fully populated, I'll start linking to it.

  47. Brent Burzycki 6 Sep 2011 Reply

Does 500px give you the experiexperience you want on g+

  48. Sandra Buskirk 6 Sep 2011 Reply

I either put the photo into my scrapbook (which I'm using as a mini G+ portfolio and as such am not putting many photos there) or I link to the set of photos on my Flickr site. I really seriously dislike that Picasa makes it SO easy for someone to download my photos, even after I specify that I don't want them to. Flickr at least disables simple right-click copying; Picasa doesn't. I know that someone who is tech-savvy will be able to copy them, regardless, and I do watermark all my photos and make sure they're all small and low-res, but I also feel that if a site wants to host professional or semi-professional level photos, they need to help protect the photographer from having her work stolen. Picasa doesn't seem to see that as a problem, so I'm not going to use their service.

Oh, and I should add this–it annoys the HELL out of me that I can't change the visibility of my scrapbook. C'mon G+, don't go all FB on us! I'm a big girl and I can decide for myself who should and shouldn't be able to see my pictures.

  49. Cora Reed 6 Sep 2011 Reply

    Some of each. 🙂

  50. Doug Brewer 6 Sep 2011 Reply

I think 500px and G+ are two different, hopefully complementary, beasts. G+ is a bit more laid-back, social gathering to shoot the breeze and talk about our work, maybe share a bit of what we're doing and why, while 500px is more of a serious, portfolio-level showcase. There is some overlap, but I don't see every photo or conversation being shared on both sites.

  51. Daniel Schwabe 7 Sep 2011 Reply

    +Vincent Mo
    Here are some additional suggestions
    – Besides your list, it would be nice to get large thumbnails when linking img urls from outside (e.g. 500px) – now I get only a small icon.
    – When a post with a photo is a re-sharing, I'd like to have the option of +1'ing it in the original post, as opposed to in the resharing post.
    – I would like to be able to have a "virtual album" of favorite photos. If you include tags, I could have a virtual album based on tag values
    – Geo tagging would be nice (in G+)
    Additional general comments:
Currently, I upload photo directly to an album in G+, then share it. It shows the album, but with the recently uploaded photo as the large thumbnail.
Sometimes I share the photo by itself, if I don't care to place it in some particular album. It goes to a default album in Picasa, and shows as "Photos from posts" in G+
I have not found a way to post a photo from an existing album such that it shows up as a large thumbnail, except moving it as the first photo in the album, using Picasa, so it becomes the album's thumbnail, and sharing the album. This would be solved by your item 1. (share album from lightbox).

  52. Brent Burzycki 7 Sep 2011 Reply

    +Maren W +Robin Griggs Wood +Cora Reed – thanks for the feedback….

+Daniel Schwabe all good points…. sharing from albums is one of my issues also and I have to agree….There are possibly many ways to solve all these issues posted.. I think we are in good hands thou… seeing the G+ team really seems to be involved at the core level….

+Doug Brewer True….. I know I cannot share nudes etc here where 500px has no issues with that – and really nor do I….

+Sandra Buskirk Is there a reason you use the Scrapbook for this vs. just sharing specific folders to specific circles?

  53. +Daniel Schwabe you can get a large thumbnail without having to reshare the entire album each time, just copy the URL of the individual image while in Picasa, return to G+ and post it to the feed as a link (click "Add") — as long as the album's visibility is already "Public" or "Limited – anyone with the link" (otherwise it hangs and won't accept the image.)

+Brent Burzycki Thank you. I read that back just now, sounded a little spoiled. I really like the community feel of G+. However, when you open up the flood gates people will expect interaction with other platforms whether they are Google creations or not. You've started up a really interesting topic. (change your phone and leave town now) ;D

  55. Daniel Schwabe 7 Sep 2011 Reply

+Robin Griggs Wood Thanks Robin. I have tried this approach before – but when I paste the Picasa url in the post, the thumbnail I get is a small one!. It occurs to me that I see it small, but others see it large in their streams. I will try again, pls tell me what you see.

  56. David A. Jank 7 Sep 2011 Reply

+Doug Brewer I think what +Brent Burzycki was asking, and if not, I am.. when you link to your 500px photo do you get a small thumbnail in your G+ post or a large one (large meaning same size as if you uploaded the photo direct to G+)? I use Zenfolio and only get small thumbnails and I understood that only by linking to picasa do you get the large thumb. I would be happy to link to external photo galleries but I suspect that Google is limiting those links to small photos to force you to upload to G+ or Picasa and that attitude is annoying me as it negates G's openness mantra.

  60. So sorry that it is not working for you, +Daniel Schwabe. Do make sure that you are clicking the link icon and and adding it to the dialogue bar there, not just pasting the URL into the post dialogue box.

  61. Daniel Schwabe 7 Sep 2011 Reply

I finally figured out why it wasn't working for me. I was copying the URL in Picasa using the "right-click ->copy image URL" command, instead of copying the URL in the address bar!
I repeat the instructions from Robin Griggs Wood :
"Click on "Photos" in the black bar at the top (Picasa albums) — navigate to the album and to the image that you want to share; click on the image — Copy the URL in the address bar only (from no where else on the page) — Click on "+[YourName]" in black bar at the top or the page — Click on the link icon in the "Share what's new…" at the top of your Stream page — paste the link into that input box — Click "Add" (the album must already be shared to "Public" or "any one with the link" or it will hang on this step). ".

  62. Doug Brewer 7 Sep 2011 Reply

+David Andrew Jank I haven't tried linking to 500px yet. Maybe I'll give it a try and see what happens. If I break G+, it's your fault, k?

OK, just tried it and yes, I only get a thumbnail version of the shot when I link to 500px. Definitely a worry. I'm trying to streamline my far-flung Internet Empire, and this is chunking a loose screw in the works.

If you use Chrome, might I recommend the Photo Zoom extension? Won't help with the thumbnail issue, but saves wear and tear on my clicking finger.

Picasa is great but a few kinks need to be worked out. People albums or identifiers can't be deleted! So it's hard to sort that out or correct mistakes like if you have two or three of the same person because of all this overlap and want to fix it you can't… but I hear problems like these are being worked on. Also, sub-albums would be great!
