+Gmail Users? Have you see a huge surge in spam lately? I have been using gmail for years and really felt Google had very much licked my spam issues but in the last several weeks I have been seeing a ton of strange spam emails…

So I clicked on all of them and gave them my CC info and they seem to still be coming…..

No I did not – but here is an example of what I have been seeing.. have you seen this also?

I spam all of them but they are up to 2-3 a day it seems….which is a massive increase when it was usually 1 or none for days at a time…

I really hope the integration of so many services is not the root cause of some of this…

nope – I use yahoo and I don't get any crap – they filter it really well!

The word salad spams are my favorite. And yes, I've been seeing an uptick in spams that are getting past Google's normally excellent filters.

I have two gmail accounts, one general one, and one for school. I seldom get spam on either one. Of course now that I've said this….

+Sandra Parlow well i can say this – I am not going to yahoo.. It took so long to get everything set in gmail… I have so many accounts moving email is like brain surgery on a bumpy road….

No, I have't received any spam. I use gmail for personal correspondence, and yahoo for junk mail. That set-up is probably the reason why I don't have receive any gmail spam.

LOL! I know! every time I say I use Yahoo I get a barrage of people saying "why are you using YAHOO?? get on GMail!!" this was my big chance to say it back! LOL!

    I don't blame you – I wouldn't want to move either!!!

You mean they come through into the Inbox instead of getting caught in the Spam folder or are you getting a lot more of them in the Spam folder?
I use the Bounce feature in the Mail app for all the spam…

  10. Brent Burzycki 19 Jan 2012 Reply

+Tom Molczynski Direct to the inbox and not getting caught…. I can see 20-40 emails a day in my personal acct – with 2-4 spams – which is nothing compared to the 20+ pop accounts I maintain daily – that said I get a ton more email from my POP accounts – Non Gmail…

but on Gmail 2-4 is easily a 200% increase in spam.. which I just think is strange – they are all the same style of email so i assume Gmail needs to just implement a better filter set for these new style emails….

It comes in cycles. All email services deal with it. There are peaks when the bad guys up the ante before the good guys can call.

I'm amazed how many millions of spam emails our University sifts through. And we've less than 50k (I think) people to protect.

A little extra email from that long lost cousin in Kenya, the one with all the money tied up in some brouhaha at the Embassy, who always wants me to sympathize with his erectile dysfunction, and has an IP address in Eastern Europe, doesn't phase me =P

Please hit the "Report spam" button and teach it to do a better job 🙂

+Dimitris Andreou I do this on all of them.. and sadly they keep coming… I am sure with many years of trying to fight spam on POP accts its just a tweak of the algorithm…

It's not that simple, and "tweaks" can only get you that far. Strong identity services are also needed (yes, much like g+ itself :))

No big upsurge for me on either regular Gmail or Google Apps email. I guess if too many get it the spam flags increase so maybe they think you are worth extra effort / personal attention.

+Kamal Tailor Thanks for that and thanks for the compliment.. I try… never enough time to get it all done..

Maybe it is because you have allowed for sending an email via G+? Although, I have also allowed but I do not receive more spam. But I have like 10 times less followers. 😉

I use the email account provided by my ISP. For a while, until I got my filters all set up I was getting a lot of spam. Occasionally some does slip by, and it seems to come in waves.
Most of it is originating from Hotmail.com and Yahoo.com.
Part of the problem is that peoples email accounts are getting hacked and spammers are stealing the contacts / address books. And not only at the email providers.

At one time I set up alternate email account only using it at one place for my login info. It was not view-able by the public and yet I still got spammed. Now how did that happen when I never gave that email address to anyone but that one site. Somehow that email address was leaking out. Care to guess which web site / social network? It's not G+.

Most of my spam is from Google. LOL

+Kamal Tailor I get tons of Google Offers emails everyday. I have not done anything to stop them so really it is my fault. I will say though that I have started to see more spam in my gmail accounts than ever before. But Nothing even close to what I get in my Yahoo account.

I had to turn off Google offers….
