What, you mean the psychic transmitter still isn't working? I'm going to have to find the guy from the pub who sold it to me and get my money back.

  2. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Dorian Stretton you got sold a bill of goods…. 🙂

  3. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

After FB trolled the "likes and interests" to use for targeted ads, I didn't put much in mine. I guess I need to do some homework.

  4. Cameron Siguenza 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Good point +Brent Burzycki It might take someone 5 or 10 minutes to fill out their profile, and try a little. Some people have done very little, no public posts other than sharing of other people's unoriginal reshared posts… So boring to look at 🙂 Apparently, though, spending this small amount of effort is lost on some people. Post a few less GIF animations and a little more profile updating.

Or you get someone who has 1000+ people following them, but they are only following 40 people. I tend not to immediately want to circle the obvious navel gazers either.

My profile has been a work in progress for a while. I keep writing and deleting. So, thanks to your post…I just put something down. I didn't realize it was so important. I like the fact that it is so easy to edit my profile on G+, so I can add more interesting things later. Thanks +Brent Burzycki

+elizabeth hahn I agree with you on that one. I think the important part to put content is the ABOUT section. If you write a Bio it will and should open doors. All the other stuff is fluff.

  7. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

    +Rob Fishback Agree

+Jaime April And I know for one I have actually read 95% of the About sections for all the people I follow….. I want to know the people following me… hell they take time to do it I can invest some time in knowing..that said big celebrities here that never follow back or never comment… that really bothers me…. they are your fans and followers.. you better damn well interact with them… its just good people skills…

  8. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Rob Fishback True – I had a short statement. I did just go back and add a few things, but like +Jaime April I think it will be a work in progress. The first thing I do when someone circles me is look at their "about" info – I should have something worth looking at too. lol or at least something about me – whether it's worth looking at is up to the viewer. lol I just noticed it put one of the flags in places I've lived in the wrong place too – guess I need to clarify.

  9. Wilson Phillips 30 Aug 2011 Reply

If your profile is blank, there is a 99% chance that I am going to pass you by. Fill in some info there and pique my interests.

  10. Jaime April 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki No, its a good point. I am not famous, but I always read the profile of people who follow me before I add them. Actually, just the people I follow in general. Because of what I do I have to be careful about who I interact with online. I think its wonderful that you take the time to learn about the people who want to learn about you. It creates a more real, organic social environment online. I wish more people would do it. You are right, its good people skills.

  11. Rob Fishback 30 Aug 2011 Reply

A good strong Bio is a important tool to carry around with you. You will use it many places and it will always be a work in progress.

  12. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Heck I tend to feel obligated to contribute good content that is helpful… yet I also fall back into posting a rant and starting an off topic conversation… everyone has a bad day here and there 🙂

  13. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Hmmmm any ideas on how to fix the flags in the map? I have never lived in southern TX/Mexico border…. I spelled out state names, it still hasn't moved it… 🙁

  14. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Might take time to update or is basing it off something else in your profile…

  15. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki true, I'll give it a while. Doesn't help that I've lived in a few places with Spanish names. I'm not sure which one was confusing it.

  16. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki and you have entertaining rants – I've never seen anyone get rude or obnoxious even when in complete disagreement with where your stream has gone.

  17. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Rob Fishback Rob you win for having the best "About" section. Hope you get back out soon.

  18. Alton Thompson 30 Aug 2011 Reply

    Thanks for the nudge.

  19. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

I also always read the About of the people who circle me, and I also read a page of their posts to see if they're posting original stuff or just sharing others'. I organized my About with a list to make it easy to see what you're in for when you circle me. 🙂 I suspect some have ignored that part…

  20. Rob Fishback 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+elizabeth hahn Thank you, I work on it everyday. It is hard to hold a camera with one hand and take photos, and it is your left hand to boot.

  21. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Rob Fishback That would be tough – I don't remember seeing cameras for lefties. Would a tripod and remote switch help? Sorry if I'm being nosy..that is not my intent.

  22. Rob Fishback 30 Aug 2011 Reply

My last 2 cents, Please ad a title like CEO, or IT Guy or Gal, even Photographer will do to go under your name on your Profile. cheers fyi, if it is short it will show whenever someone mouses over your name.

  23. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

    I agree with the subtitle item…..good point…

  24. Robin Griggs Wood 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Rob Fishback — There is a section in "About" where you can note your occupation. The subtitle area can be used for that, but is also good for short blurbs. (I think I learn a lot more about a person from them).

  25. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

I just discovered another thing. If you don't have any publicly-shared posts, how are people supposed to know if they want to follow you?

  26. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Mike Keller It does seem there is mass confusion about setting and options.. but that is why places like Facebook just default to showing vs. blocking things……

  27. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki when first joining +, my impression was that we create circles so we can have conversations among people with like interests. For instance, if you have a politics circle, you post all your political discussion to that circle, not to public. Likewise, if you want to read political discussion, you select to read that circle.

However, an awful lot of people aren't doing that. In the first week, I recall +Robert Scoble stating "if you want me to share something, you have to post it to Public." I don't understand that reasoning at all, I see stuff posted to "limited" and i respect that and share it also only to a circle that I think will appreciate it. (or perhaps "My Circles") But apparently, if you want someone like Scoble to spread the word about you, you have to make sure you post to everything to Public. I've also seen others who say they post everything to public because (essentially) they don't want to do the work of being selective in who they target.

OTOH, you probably have people who doing it the other way to the extreme. Only sharing to their specific circles and never to Public, where someone outside their circles never sees it. Perhaps they want to stay private, so they only get seen when they enter a discussion like this one.

So yes, there's confusion, but there's also some who just deliberately ignore the beauty of the Google+ design. This is one of those things that leads to clogged Streams. 🙂

  28. Tyler Lovelace 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Mike Keller I think the idea is there are some things you might like the public to know
The only reason the "Follow War" of sorts is really happening is because not enough of people's friends are joining Google+
Atleast, that's how it is for me…
    IMO, highly IMO

  29. Robert Scoble 30 Aug 2011 Reply

if you share something with only a "limited" circle I won't reshare it. Why? Because you have signaled to the world that that item is only for that circle and I won't break that contract. So, that's is why I will only reshare things put into public.

  30. Tyler Lovelace 30 Aug 2011 Reply

    +Robert Scoble
    Understandable
But, why not atleast share with a relevant group if the content seems like it is something to reshare (Like, a video or an article to a website that has thousands of views everyday)

    No damage done
You just have to use common sense when it comes to reshares
    That's all 🙂

edit: Of course, you post so much people complain, so maybe it helps keep your posting in check 😛

  31. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Robert Scoble if I share something only to the photography group, and it's a photograph, why not re-share it? "Limited" does not mean "private." If I wanted it private, I wouldn't share to people I don't know. In fact, I'd select the people by name.

  32. Brent Burzycki 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Is there not a bigger issue with limited shares? I do not know who you actually shared with…thus I do not know who you might not want it shared with…

I share everything public unless its a specific group I want to notify about a post or a DM style post to a few specific people…

  33. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

Think of it this way. I shared with you as part of my limited shares. I thought you would be interested in it (for whatever reason). Now you look at this and you think "I know some people who'd like this." I've already trusted you to make a good choice.

We're assuming (wrongly) that someone posted something limited because they didn't want some people to see it. But perhaps I shared it in limited groups because I *didn't want to inflict" it upon people that I didn't know would be interested. Politics, religion, controversial subjects are all things I'm interested in, but I don't want the people who circled me for one interest to get pissed because they start seeing stuff they're not interested in (or they disagree with).

I think when I post to Limited from now on, I'll add You're welcome to share this as you see fit. 🙂

  34. Mike Keller 30 Aug 2011 Reply

And not to beat this up 🙂 but aren't we seeing a bigger problem with Public shares? How many times are you seeing the same stuff (photos, posts) shared over and over? The other day I saw the same post five times in a row on my Stream, it got re-shared that quickly.

  35. Elizabeth Hahn 30 Aug 2011 Reply

I am torn – while yes I agree +Mike Keller it's frustrating to see the same post shared 8000 times, if it's an important subject, I don't mind. I can always mute the 7999 extra posts. If it's an animated GIF then grrrrrr. I do share both publicly and to limited circles. The limited ones are usually just people I actually know and is about something personal. If it's really private, I will lock so no one can reshare. The problem I have with people posting to target circles is I have a lot of interests – It would be disappointing to be excluded from a post just because someone didn't want to "flood the stream"

  36. Rob Fishback 30 Aug 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki You are saying just because I was posting only to my Photo circle of some 60+ users back when is why I had no response and should have asked my questions and shared my content to PUBLIC. +Colby Brown should use read this thread and construct a circle tutorial from it.

+Tracy Sloan No one can know everything. Me especially, I still think P is just a letter. Let me know if I am wrong. As for being all those things, I have worn many Hats. I did Graphic Design, Digital Art, Construction, the list goes on. Made most of my money off Photography and Graphic Design.

  40. Brent Burzycki 31 Aug 2011 Reply

+Tracy Sloan thats why we have the BUDA Button… (Block your dumb A**)

+Rob Fishback I know one thing I learned early on – if you do not post publicly it will not show up on your public wall and will not be put into search engines… I like my posts to be in public I honestly do not care – nothing I talk about here is private… if I want privacy I call them… I use this type of service for people to find out more about me. It does not mean anyone will actually like me but I am ok with that there are plenty of people in the world…

+Robert Scoble brings up a very interesting point about limited sharing that i believe would or could have a massive affect on someone.. Lets say I shared a limited post with photographers, my limit circle is 10 people… then Robert sees it and decides to share it with his circle of 50,000 photographers… Let's just say I understand why he takes that stance on limited etc…

Many here have learned the hard way…I have seen personal email and phone numbers shared accidentaly… actually it was one of the G+ users with a gazillion followers…. it was deleated quickly but it can happen….

We all need to know and understand the system but also need to make some very important decisions before posting anything… I have a list of things I go down in my head before posts…

Where am I sharing this to and how will it effect my carreer if someone reads it…. thats on the top… if it is going to be an issue I probably will not post it – just like all my friends on facebook that get drunk and decide its a good time to start posting…. really dudes… not a good time to be posting stuff or taking photos for that matter…
