BEHIND THE LENS – PHOTO CRITIQUE

10 Sep 2011 admin In G+ Posts

Well for a Friday I have seen a pile of posts that are negative, so instead of falling into the strange day this has turned into…I will let this shot of Divini set a different tone… I think I need to mute some people.. and as much as I love cats… Caterday? Really? Well to each their own and onto this shot:

An amazing model to work with… down to earth and just professional…

My Glamour Tip of tonight.. pay for good models it will make what you do turn out better, and if you are just starting out, save up your money and use good models that know how to pose… It will help you become a better photographer overall….

I try to classify what I shoot as sexy, but classy, as we all know this differs greatly from person to person…

If you take the time to critique or comment (both are welcome) but please let me know your views on Classy, Sexy Images – What are your limits? What are your likes? Why do you like what you like?

Is this shot too much?
Not Enough?
Sexy?
Not Sexy?
I love it?
I hate it?

I am all ears…….

+1 so now I'll see this picture every time someone comments on it.

+Mark Bienvenu she might be considered looking twice at…..

That's a superb setup, model and shot.

Tough job, but you make a very good point with your statement.

Is this shot too much? Not for me
Not Enough? Just right for an open forum
    Sexy? For sure
    Not Sexy? you are kidding
    I love it? Yes
I hate it? Why should I.

I like your composition in an editorial way as there is enough negative space on the right side for advertising something. The model is extraordinary good looking and the lighting is perfect – at least in my humble understanding.

Your advice of getting an experienced model I can just agree. I started with an experienced model myself and could get good insight about posing and as well about lighting as she used to be a photographer on her own.

+Steve Monck its only a part time job… actually even less… I wish I had more time…. Thou I have to say its tougher than most would think, I tend to be so transfixed on making a great image the model and I are happy with, I tend to try to block out the fact they are potentially half naked or nude etc…

Professionalism is key… at least for some of us….. i cannot speak for all…..

  7. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Kiri bane Yes – it is a great point that you can gleen great info from an experienced model… So you might need to pay them but there is built in experience, modeling info – posing help, the possibility of her knowing how to do her own makeup and hair….

even more interesting is this model has now become a photographer also……

Very sexy… I think it's tough to get the balance right because in a varied audience the fine line between to little or to much is impossible to hit as everyone's views on this are going to be very different. For me this hits right on the razor edge close to too much but not over the line which is right where you want it… sexy but not too much. That said there will always be people that think it is too much so you have to know your audience and shoot for them alone and don't worry to much about the naysayers.

Well done, nice shot, great pose, she looks like she not only knows what she is doing but also having fun doing it. Thanks for the tips, this is one area that I haven't gotten into (portraits in general, including "classy" or "sexy"). Lighting on body looks to have blown out and face is a little dark which tends to draw your eyes away from the face, not necessarily bad just depends on what you are trying to emphasize. Could crop the right side a bit more, extra dead space there. Sexy/classy photos are good as long as they are tastefully done, this is a good example of an appropriate/tasteful image, often times the appropriateness comes down to the audience of the image.

gloves off – hair is a little messy – the strands going across when most of there hair flows down and behind the punch bag? there is a little black strap protruding, her skin is pinched under her right arm between her hip and breast.

All something that I guess you'd fix for a commercial shoot.

She is pretty, sexy and the shot powerfully displays that. The shadows over her abdomen really shot the muscle and form of her body.

Back to your comments about models, I agree, that paying for models who can pose is most definitely the way to go.
When I did some modeling photography we used models who were keen for practice and the results were….. kak, When I worked in the UK in the commercials industry we'd always film and shoot with proper models and their competence and knowledge of how to use their bodies and pose based on the needs of the shoots made the shoots effortless

I like the shot, the lighting is really good although her right shoulder and arm are a little blown out. You pulled off the difficult game of having a hand near her face. I think the balance is pretty good – its not more than you would see down the local pool or at the beach so is family friendly. Nice work.

+Ken Erickson I agree – I worry as to what to post here… well sort of worry… I shoot all kinds of images, some are way over the top for here, but I can post them elsewhere and link to them. The interesting part with this image is she is clothed in a way that would make it into most magazines that are not hidden on the back row…. As in I see images with more skin than this on most news stands….

+Kevin Watts it is – the question is where is that edge….. how do you know…… and should you care… all good questions and points…

  13. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Paul Pavlinovich Thanks Paul… hand near the face is an interesting problem – I have to say that in my limited experience that hand position is helped greatly by a model that can pose… I would have never been able to properly explain to her how to pose this shot – she is really just having fun… and that is a key item to glamour work as I see it..

+Hamish Niven thanks for the critiques… and yes i agree… I could come up with excuses for each but thats not why I posted it… I think messy hair is sexy – but I would also agree its a bit wild and messy…

This was more of a fun shoot vs. commercial – but yes – Technically there are several things I still should fix on the image now….under her eye being one thing.. and tip two of tonight – do not edit when your tired and just want to post something to G+ 🙂

A bit cheeky, very sexy, and I love it..
Glamour photography certainly has the ability to polarize opinions, and from a personal standpoint I prefer to see images like this one, which leave me wanting to see just a little bit more..

  15. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Doug Wittrock I think the negativity here tonight was and is an interesting combination of 9/11, and various other opinions … that and the fact as a moderator now for Behind the lens – Photo Critiques I see a lot more public posts from a lot more people.. I am not really complaining, it was just a stranger evening than most here…. just seeing a larger slice of G+…. The negativity I saw was not related to critiques etc.. it was just general displeasure….

On your other points.. I have to say yes… When I shoot I try to think of scenarios I would want to see if I came home from a crap day and was greeted by my amazing girlfriend or wife etc….. While those images tend to be more than just what I shoot and share here.. the first image you see on that crap day or in that doorway might be the one you remember most…..

+Bryan Seears As you say cheeky.. and I love those types of images… a smidge naughty, but cute, and playful with a bit of tease tossed in for fun….. I also really enjoy working with models that are very sure of themselves.. actually I totally respect women that can take care of themselves and are not afraid to know they have it….. and use it if needed…

  16. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Stephen Dickson it is picky and thats why its posted…. I appreciate the critique… I have plenty of shots with her wearing much less…. If that stuff does not offend – feel free to take a look on my 500px page: http://500px.com/BlackDiamond – Let me know what you think……

  17. Paul Pavlinovich 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Brent Burzycki I agree – the model having fun or at least being amused comes out in the photos.

  18. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Paul Pavlinovich shooting should always be a fun experience – I try hard to make sure it is.. be that taking into consideration what the model likes to do or just keeping her amused with my amazing ability to pose … (actually I suck at posing and trying to show her how I might think something will look) but model laugh at that and thats always good…

    she gorgeous!

  20. Jack L 10 Sep 2011 Reply

Amazing shot. I would say the only 2 things are that her left side is slightly blown out and the black strap running from her right arm to her waist kind of grabs my attention. A very sexy and tastefully done photo.
I am just curious as to how much it would cost for a model for a shoot. That is one area I have not looked into yet but would love to at some point.
    Thank you for sharing!

  21. Paul Pavlinovich 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Jack L depends where you are, how busy the model is (i.e. is she hungry) and how much she likes you and your project. You can go from time-for-prints (or images) up to as much as you've got invested in your house!

  22. Jack L 10 Sep 2011 Reply

Damn! I better find a hungry one then… lol

I find the shot fun, athletic, sexy and most of all flirty. These are the kind of gals that i grew up with, comfortable with their looks but not over the top…heck you can almost go to the mall and see less clothing these days…as far as critiquing the photo..the thing is I like it, but i'm not a pro like +Hamish Niven who obviously looks at photos with a pro/editor eye. That's always very interesting to me…and always a learning experience. PS screw the trolls!

Excellent photo and setup, like others have said the black pole in the background is a bit distraction..other than that superb 🙂

  27. Brent Burzycki 10 Sep 2011 Reply

+Marcial Quintero those are all key aspects to a successful shoot…..and all much more easily attained with a experienced model that is very comfortable in her own skin…

+Jussi Alanko thanks for the input….

+Terrell Woods I know I have seen less clothing at the mall… which is what is funny about our society sometimes…. If I posted this on lets say facebook – it would probably have been reported.. and why now I only use FB for close friends that will not move here…

In looking over this shot again there are several things I think I would change……
