I don't use Instagram, but square crop is something that I save for special occasions.  It seldom works well.

Technically I did not use instagram as it should be used with this show… Cropping a previously shot image vs something just shot…

  5. Nice shot +Brent Burzycki.

I use apps like SquareReady or #NoCrop  to overcome the 1:1 aspect ratio, otherwise it's too annoying to crop a 4:3 shot.

Would be better without the crop.

It is a mobile platform, have always wondered why people use it for pushing their photography when most images are not composed for the square format. Personally I like the square format and using Instagram with a smartphone certainly challenges the composition skills if nothing else…

Yes I don't like it and use it only for quick snapshots 🙂

I find the square crop like fast food. Ok sometimes but there is so much more available.

I shot a Bronica MF for years so square is nothing new. Now ,adapting a previously shot image is something else.

I compose with Instagram in mind when making a photo I want to share on that service. But I also only post photos taken on my phone. If I were taking a photo of a photo, I'd compose accordingly.

I know you are an Android user but on my iPhone I use an app called Squaready. It frames the rectangular image in a square and allows you to post the result straight to instagram. I would imagine there is something similar in the Google store.

There are a couple of apps. for squaring up "normal" in Google Play. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.photosquarer.squareimage and you can try squareit.
