The mighty X- 15! In her day, the only plane that could catch one was an SR- 71 Blackbird! I remember it when it was new!

It was a rocket, dropped from belly of a b29 or b52 it would fall free, ignite rocket engine till it reached max speed. An d fuel was expended , then dead stick glide to rolling landing in the desert, Chuck Yeager became first man to break speed of sound in this baby

+Hoss Gilmer false. Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1 that was dropped by a B-29. The X-15 was dropped by a B-52 and was flown by William J Knight at more than Mach 6.
