The receipt may or may not be a joke. But if it is not, it always disturbs me when the rare instance of extravagance is used as a hammer to indict the vast majority of food stamps recipients. The vast majority of people on food stamps don't use them this way. Most food stamps recipients struggle to just to have enough food on the table for themselves and their children and believe it or not, many food stamps recipients work every day….they just don't make a living wage. There is waste fraud and abuse in every occupation, institution and in every program. The fact that corporations have engineered a political and economic system where they get away with paying so much of their workforce truly unlivable wages because they know the state will have to pay for the workers food (food stamps ) and healthcare (Medicaid ) is a bigger problem and a sadder statement about our country than one person buying lobster on food stamps.
Oh there is definitely something wrong here. It works like this the woman and kids shack up illegally with a man with a decent job then spend all their foodstamps on this it is a blatent abuse of the program. I live in an area where 60% of the people are on foodstamps and half of them do this the other half sell them for drugs. It is a slap in the face to a working man +Brent Burzycki
There are no regulations to prevent purchases such as this, but you do have to wonder about how these people will eat for the rest of the month. Foodstamps are not unlimited, however many people do use them for splurges like this, and they don't know how to budget their money otherwise either.
I agree with the statements.. here as there is a much larger issue.. +Craig Pifer you bring up a great point… basic knowledge of how to handle money..
I cannot tell you how many poor communities I have been in that the cars out front have 30" wheels that cost 8K but their house has garbage in the front yard..
There was an interview the other day in the city of Richmond CA – they were finally tearing down a dump of a house in the iron triangle (easy the worst part of town) it took years to get it finally torn down legally – the interview was with a self admitted poor down and out lady that simply stated.. I might be poor but why should our poor neighborhood not be treated the same.. I have the right to a nice community even thou it is a bad / poor neighborhood… She is right – but she probably also picks up trash in the street to help attain this goal…
Most do not give a crap and just abuse the system…
Receipts like this are extremely misleading. The average SNAP monthly benefit is 133.80 per person. This provides a person $4.46 a day. Eating 3 meals a day averages out to about 1.48 per meal. Most people find it hard to pick up a couple of grocery items and not drop $30.00 a pop. People who use this benefit typically are extremely frugal how they spend this benefit to extend the entire month.
Also, the one thing this receipt doesn't show is the SNAP allowance left over for the month. My guess is it was conveniently cut to mislead people into thinking everyone on the SNAP program is living high on the hog. Not quite.
I am familiar with one community where many folks were getting by with help from government programs, their lives were not something most people would envy. There was one drug dealer, but he eventually got caught, and ended up with lodging and meals provided by a different government program.
Wow, seemed so unlikely I didn't bother to check Snopes. Thanks +Isaac Cubillos Couldn't help but notice a bit of irony in the scofflaws name. How many people named Cuff end up wearing them?
this has to be in Maine!
I'd say the chances that this is a joke are in the high 90s.

+Torshi DeJarnett i agree with your comment also but I have seen this type of thing to often in my area 🙂

Couldn't help but notice a bit of irony in the scofflaws name.
How many people named Cuff end up wearing them?
And I can't help asking: is lobster "meat"?…
He wasn't interested in a meal, he was reselling these things.
I'm sorry, I meant 'meat'.
Why, yes, it is. Lobsters are animals, and therefore their flesh is meat.
The same happens with fish?
Yep, fish meat is also meat. Meat isn't limited to mammals.
