And the "Valkyrie" WOULD HAVE allowed the U.S. the upper hand in the nuclear arms race of the "Cold War" if it had only been built sooner. It was a bomber with fighter capabilities. (I.e. Sidewinder, Sparrow missiles and Maverick rockets were able to be used)
It was cancelled as the Soviets developed surface to air missiles that could take down fast high flyers. The strategy shifted to terrain followers, ICBMS, and ballistic missile subs. Since then, we have added cruise missiles.
+Ron Michel Valkyrie never suffered anyones loss of life or injury. And….while in-flight, had only ONE catastrophic failure when a pigeon was sucked into the right engine intake upon liftoff. Pilot was able to correct and turn around to land.
+Ron Michel not exactly the same as Concorde. Perhaps on the same platform, but the Concorde was a supersonic aircraft brought down by its "sonic boom" over populated areas.
The Valkyrie was brought down by the Cold War de-escalations thanks to the suaveness of Ronald Reagan. Had the talks failed with the (then) Soviet Union, it would've actually seen service. And flying as a ramjet engine would certainly allow the pilots and crew a better chance at avoiding SAM's. Well…..its speed plus its altitude ceiling being over 80,000 feet.
Brent…the photo credit is mine…Larry McManus This jet was developed way before the concord and Russian jets were thought of…in the late 1950's. Only two were built. One crashed during a photo shoot. The other is in the U.S.A.F. Museum.
Who knows what was the estimated production costs per unit, becoz i seriously doubt if it even came close to what they are paying for bombers or fighters now???
I know about that firsthand, i worked in a squadron that had four different types of aircraft, just looking out on the flightline was a awesome sight to behold.
What kind of Jet is that, nice design
+Robert Polk I think that is an XB 70.
That's a cool Jet
+Robert Polk Yep. Imagine if we accually used them.
it looks like a spacecraft almost
XB-70 Valkyrie? I remember building a model of that plane as kid (a loooonngg time ago). Gorgeous.
Beautiful, but it has the radar signature of the Hindenberg.

+Anumu Nicholas this "new" type of jet was last flown nearly 40 years ago.
Not so new.
Excellent style

It's a copy of the Concorde 70s! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde) lol
I would be very worried if a fleet of them pop out of the sky American pride
Wouldn't want to mess with that
What a gorgeous bird. I love the Valkyrie.
based on a concorde? lol, never, thats french, this says right on it USA.
+Shadow Rider yes, but short run and accidents, concorde might come back though.
based on russian aircraft "drop snoot" designs. good for hyper-sonic travel, but not much use for anything else. =)

+Shadow Rider There was one fatal crash. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fCORwUxlNQo
+Shadow Rider google plus hickupping lol 🙂 is concorde the same jet? but yes the concorde did crash.
+Jérôme Bussière Nothing like the Concorde

Hey Thanks Ron
no problem, one with a horn to toot, when they don't toot it, i will toot it! toot toot. lol cheers!
It look like its a white clouds flying jet, but all the same well built jet.
Thanks larry.
The Valkyrie, a beautiful bird.
Curse the missile technology advancements! Loved to have seen a flight line of these at a air base.

+Jimmy Lyons war machines are always a pocket filler. just the mirror in a fa-18 is like 25k.
