The reason the exhaust is so black is that the engines are burning very rich, Biggs is above 5000 ft above sea level – engines are richer yet, and he is using water injection wich allows for even more fuel to be dumped in. If this is during the summer the density altitude is even higher. B-52's were even blacker and there was 8 engines instead of 6 so the black trail was even bigger.
